Texans’ long tradition of playing poker

Aside from the World Series of Poker, Texas has a long history of playing poker. Texans have played poker for years and even a few of the world’s top players were born and raised in Texas. Poker was once a popular game in card rooms in Las Vegas, but in the 1960s, Texas Hold’em took over and grew in popularity. In fact, it was formally named Texas hold’em by the Texas State Legislature.

Although the game has been played in Texas for over three centuries, the game did not become the most popular poker variant until the late 1980s, when hold’em surpassed draw as the most popular poker variation. But hold’em’s popularity did not increase until the early 2000s, when no-limit hold’em became the rage. Although hold’em is not a traditional game in Texas, it is one that is distinctly Texan and deserves to be recognized as a distinct game.
